Once in a Life Time

Thursday, November 20th, 2008

Flash! It is time to invest in the stock market. I suggest that people average into this market that has well overshot the mark. My suggestion would be to invest 25% each month over the next 3 months and keep 25% in cash. Obama’s election will begin to sooth the markets. With the lowest interest rates that I have ever experienced and no fear of inflation, these markets could be on the verge of an upside explosion. The bellwether stocks are selling at 6-8 times earnings when the average over the last 30 years has been 21. Some of these stocks are paying up to an 8% dividend. Remember when I suggested selling silver at $17 up to $20 – it is currently at $9. I also shared my opinion on crude oil at $140 and said at that price it was insane - now it is near $50. Well, this is my next prediction for you, and the money you make on the next advance in the stock market may provide you with the extra funds needed for your treasure hunts.

As I promised yesterday, I want to give you some examples of treasures that are in the market today at bargain prices. Daum Nancy and Galle art glass have fallen in value along with the markets in general. Should they have? I don’t think so and at the moment I believe that you should have an open your eyes for items made by these companies. I prefer Daum Nancy to Galle but that is merely a personal preference. Vases that were selling for $2,500 or more have been selling for a little over $1,000. What a bargain. Daum and Galle pieces are no longer being produced so there are limited availible. Supply and demand never changes for long and soon the buyers will realize that and begin buying the rarer and unusual pieces again. Buyers will soon be willing to pay what the marketplace demands.

By buying the better pieces that are being offered, your return should meet the 31 Club’s rule for doubling the price of what we sell versus our cost. This will get you back on track again with the 31 Steps to success. Don’t forget that a penny doubled 31 times is still over $21,000,000. Where are you in the race to complete the 31 Steps?

Now is not the time to quit, but to increase your efforts, because the best opportunity in the last 10 years to capitalize and become successful is yours today. Buckle up, tighten your belt and dive head long into the search for “Antiques and Fine Art” that can be more rewarding than your wildest imagination.

Is a Shakeout Imminent in the Antique & Fine Art Industry

Monday, September 29th, 2008

In several of my previous blogs, and in my book 31 Steps to Your Millions in Antiques & Collectibles, I’ve commented that the marketplace will always adopt to the conditions its presented. Right now, in the Antiques and Fine Art Markets, we’re presented with various venues, along with their associated fees, that today, have risen to unheard of levels. For example, today you find Auction houses collecting close to 50% of an item’s value in commissions and fees. They collect this amount by “double dipping” – collecting, what I consider, out-of-line- fees from the seller, and then charging the buyer a fee for the privilege of buying. I don’t know about this, but I have to ask myself this: When did auction houses become part owner of your inventory or your personal belongings? Last time I checked, my real estate agent was collecting 6% or less from the seller, and the buyer certainly didn’t have to pay a buyer’s fee for the privilege of buying.

This is just one example of what’s happened within industry, but the point is this: There is only so much people will take before they “revolt.” Lately, I am beginning to see the marketplace adapt to the conditions its been presented with lately, and people are beginning to rumble.

Business who have thrived on eBay in the past, are heading for the exit doors today, finding alternative sales formats due to eBay’s escalating fees. It can’t be too far down the road that people will revolt against the fees charged at auction houses, as well. I believe a shakeup is imminent, and ideas that have been germinating are now just sprouting.

31 Club and its programs for our industry is part of this shakeout and is sprouting a new venues, where both seller and buyer will benefit by lower fees and no buyers premium. A company who makes money on the back end after having provided a service, rather than on the front end.

There is no question in my mind that the Antique and Fine Art markets are going to have a shakeout, however the bigger question is this: What form will replace the existing way of doing business? I believe it will be a model similar to what we are creating at 31 Club, and a place where you can do the majority of your business on one site. 31 Club is a company you can partner up with and one that has been formed to assure your success before thinking about themselves. For these reasons and many more, I believe that the formation of the 31 Club is a glimpse into the future of this industry.

I believe companies like Blackwells Live Auction and Antique Associates at West Townsend are companies whose pages you might want to explore, among others. If you become aware of companies who are shaking off the unreasonable ways, or you might be one of these companies yourselves, please send us an email and let us know. We’ll be writing about this approaching shakeout over this coming year and want to include those who are in step with the changing times.

Jeremy has assured me he hasn’t even begun to create the most exciting site on the web for us, and we have begun discussions conducting having our own auctions. Wouldn’t that be great to have fees for services that don’t require you to declare them as half owner of your belongings.
Your ideas about how we might improve services to members are welcome and encouraged. Please e-mail us at info@31corp.com or give us a call at 847-784-8544

Don’t Let What you Don’t Know or Fear Stop You

Saturday, August 16th, 2008

How do you know you haven’t already passed on that special piece? Every time someone finds a treasure, you can be sure that many people have passed on it because they didn’t know what it was or because they were afraid to take a chance. Our goal is not to let either of these excuses stop us from reaching our financial goals in the Antique and Fine Art Busness.

This week, a gentleman called me about a pair of Oriental vases he thought might be a great buy if he could acquire them. His potential customer had e-mailed him about the pair.

I asked him what the customer was asking for them.

“Nothing yet,” he said. “They want to know what they’re worth.”

“Are you going to be paid to do the appraisal,” I asked him?

“I don’t think so.”

“Why don’t you respond to the email saying you’d be interested in the vases, if they’d give you a price. You could also state the vases could possibly be worth $500 up to many thousands depending on their history.”

With his knowledge in this area, it might be well worth the risk of investing $1000 to $1500 in this pair. If he is wrong, the chances are he will still make a profit. But what if he’s right? Then the rewards could be a profit of $20,000 or more. No, he isn’t sure which of these scenarios will play out, but he can’t be hurt very much by either of them. I am hoping he gets that call and the price they ask for the vases is reasonable.

Some of you will remember when I entered an antique shop close to my home and was told they had nothing for me that day. Still, I asked, “Are you sure?”
” I do have a painting here, but it’s sold,” the shop owner told me. This gave me an opening.

“May I see it,” I asked?

He took me to the back of the shop where I laid eyes on a wonderful early painting of two little girls skipping rope.

“What did you get for this wonderful painting,” I asked?

“Twenty-five thousand dollars,” he proudly stated.

I asked if he’d been paid for it, and he told me the painting was on hold and he hadn’t been paid yet. Now the door was wide open for me, so I ask him if he’d call me in a couple of weeks if he hadn’t been paid. Sure enough, two weeks later I got that call. I purchased this painting for $16,000. I didn’t really know what it was worth because I wasn’t familiar with the artist, Frederick Morgan, but I was willing to gamble that its value was at least $16,000.

The advantage that you have over me in these situations is that the 31 Club is there to help determine values. Did I know that this would turn out to be a great find for me? Absolutely not. But, it was. This painting later sold at Christie’s for $115,000. What would the results have been if I had said I wasn’t interested because I didn’t know what its worth was or I didn’t know the artist.

I could tell you many more stories like these, but the important thing to remember is that if the price seems right on a piece your looking at, take the chance. You won’t always make a fortune on every piece, but I’ll bet your decisions will be correct most of the time, so little mistakes are just learning experiences. This is why 31 Club Members just learning the business start with a trading account of only $100. That’s so their mistakes won’t cost them big while they’re learning.

When you buy something, sell it as quickly as possible. This should not take longer than 3-6 months. This way, you will have your money back in circulation to move on to your next purchase, win, lose or draw. Don’t hold on to marginal items trying to get more for them than the market will bear. Turn, Turn and Turn your money over and over until one day you wake up and the world is yours.

Always Making Progress in the Antique & Fine Art Business

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008
Louise E. Edwards-Doulton Lambeth 19″ Vase, circa 1882, is offered at 31 Gallery & Marketplace.

I’ve written several times that high quality items are selling in today’s market and this is reflected in our 31 Gallery & Marketplace sales. I believe as money continues to tighten in America, quality in the antique and fine art market will be like cream rising to the top. In the last week, our Hannah Barlow designed Doulton vase sold for over $3700, and the other Doulton Lambeth piece in our gallery will not be far behind. Our Jean Faurege painting also sold for $5,000. What if these items had been yours?

Because of the high quality of items being presented in our Gallery & Marketplace, many serious collectors are returning to see what new items have been added. The Gallery & Marketplace is available for 31 Club Members to list their high quality items, and if you’re not a member yet, why not?

I believe our 19” Louisa E. Edwards vase by Doulton will soon sell. It was made in 1882 and incorporated at least two other assistants in its production. At $3750, I believe it’s a bargain for anyone looking for something very special to add to their collection.

What will set the 31 Marketplace above most other places offering Antiques and Fine Art is that our members can make substantial money without using a single penny of their own money. This is accomplished by using the club’s Associates Program when you find high quality art and antiques that may be out of your budget to purchase. When you call and tell us about the item, the 31 Club partners with its member to acquire the item and though this partnership, we are able to bring great treasures to the market together.

With the dollar so beaten up in our country, this might be a great time to concentrate on items made out of this country. You see, the Hannah Barlow vase was sent back to its country of origin – England. With the difference in currency, this English buyer bought the item at near half price.
A few of the companies that can pay you great dividends if you are knowledgeable enough to spot them are Meissen, Rosenthal, Nymphenburg, Doulton, Royal Worchester, Dahl Jensen and Hutschenreuther. If you find a treasure of this sort and list it with us, either yourself or through the Associates Program, it will get a good look from our foreign collectors.

While these are just a few of the companies, a little research into more companies will increase your knowledge. It’s in researching that you learn best. There are several books that you can find used that will give more detail on these companies. I would high suggest that you either buy or read books at your local bookstore or library on these companies

Here’s a 31 Club Update of our development progress:

* An Online Inventory Sheet so you can keep track of your items and your progress is in the final stages of testing. I think it will be a great asset to you.

*The 31 Gangs Race to A Million Progress Sheet has been up dated and will be posted soon. I think that you will be surprised by the gangs progress.

*The 31 Club Panel of Experts is coming together and I think there are going to be many experts who will be there for you.

*Free Advertising for your Wish List is the next major item for Jeremy to complete.

*The Associates Program is up and running well. There have been several members who have already taken advantage of this program.

*New Items Coming. There are approximately 100 new items in the process of are being listed on the Marketplace.

*Video. The club is now the proud owner of a video camera and all the accessories necessary to do video for the site. If you have video you’d like to share with the Club please, send it to us. It is all right to advertise your site or store.

Our membership is growing every day, and I personally thank you for your support by telling your friends and enrolling your family and for staying with us while we build our site from scratch. These are, indeed, exciting times we live in.

Full Speed Ahead for the 31 Club Gallery & Maketplace

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008
This Jean Faurege painting sold this week at the 31 Club Gallery for $5,000.

I am going to be up front with you, because this blog is mostly about your 31 Club Marketplace. I’ve been telling you for some time now that all the hard work Cindy, Chris, and Jeremy have been doing would pay off for our members. Well, we are beginning to see the results. The marketplace part of the 31 Club will be perhaps your greatest asset in this business. Let me explain that statement:

Getting top dollar for the fine art, antique & collectible items we sell in this business is important, but the percentage of the sale we keep has equal importance.

Within a very short period of time, our emails and phone calls have lit up with inquiries about our listings. Just in the last few days, we’ve sold the Jean Faurege Painting and the Doulton Lambeth-Hannah Barlow decorated vase. The painting brought $5000 and the vase $3750.

The owners of these items could have taken these pieces to auction or listed them on eBay, but here’s the difference. Customers are beginning to recognize the quality we are showing in the gallery and are seeing that they don’t have to look through hundreds of items to find one of quality. I believe these two items we sold this week would have sat in a shop or in a booth at a show forever because of the few number of people that would have seen them, but with your 31 Club Gallery, there are now thousands of people viewing items every month.

When customers come to our 31 Club Gallery & Marketplace, they’ll find items of high quality without searching through an endless inventory of common items. Once customers find something they like, they are buying it at the asking price.

I can assure you that the people who bought the Faurege painting and the Doulton Lambeth vase will know they bought a quality piece at a fair price. I’ve already received an email from the woman who purchased the painting expressing her complete satisfaction.

Selling items at auction can be expensive, but not selling items at the 31 Club Gallery & Marketplace. And buyers don’t have to worry about buyer’s premium when they buy.

$500 was the total commission on the $5,000 painting with no buyer’s premium a buyer would have to pay to an auction house. In this way, the buyer could pay the asking price and still save money, while the seller received $4,500. Compare that with what they would’ve received at auction house or on eBay.

The commission on the Doulton Lambeth vase was only $281.25, netting the seller $3468.75. I highly encourage you to consider listing your better items on the 31 Club Gallery & Marketplace. If they don’t sell as quickly as you would like, you can always sell them at auction. Another great advantage to your marketplace is that your items never leave your hands until they are sold.

Beginning Wednesday, Cindy and I will be photographing over 100 new items we’ll be listing, and I think you’ll enjoy and benefit from these expanded listings. I believe there’s a new Sheriff coming to town and it’s the 31 Club Gallery & Marketplace. Remember –I told you first.

It is so easy for Club Members to list with us.

Everything is sold on the condition that it is still available. You send us the pictures and descriptions and the prices you wish to achieve and we’ll set you up. We do reserve the right to refuse items if they don’t meet our high standards or if they are over priced for the current market. We are using the honor system with our members. You’ll deal with the customer directly and will send us the commission check. Yes, we are going to be a community that helps one another.

Members –Remember — If you come across special items beyond your buying budget, call us and see if the items fits our Associates Program. We’ll help you buy the item!
